It’s that time of the year again! In the coming days and weeks many kids are returning back to school. And for some, that means that they will face bullying head on. In recent years, our society has become more attune to the lives of students inside the walls of their schools. We’ve become more aware of the impact of bullying and teasing on their emotional health. While some believe that bullying is a rite of passage for young people, I think there are many more of us out there who wish to create a greater culture of respect and kindness that we may have been privy to growing up.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has developed an app called “KnowBullying” which will help parents and educators talk to children about bullying as well as help create greater social awareness. Helpful sections include warning signs that a child may be experiencing bullying and quick reminders to help you stay engaged about talking with your child about their experiences at school and online. The app is available for FREE in the Google Play and iTunes Store. More information is also available at store.samhsa.gov/apps/bullying.
